sprout IS more physical. he has been from the beginning. he rolled from back to front at about 2 1/2 months- bean was 6 months before she did that. sprout achieved every physical milestone before his sister. he also does a lot of things that she never did- bite and hit to name a couple of my favorites. sigh.
BUT is it because he is a boy?? i'm not 100% sold on that. i'm sure it may have something to do with it but not everything. i mean, he is the second child. think about it, he is watching another kid do all these things and they look fun, right? of course he wants to walk- he wants to be like his sister. bean had no one to watch except "big people" and who wants to be like a big person? i'm not sure i want to be like a big person! ;)
and i'm sure that personality is involved too. bean was a cautious child. i she had the ability to walk much earlier than she actually did. i mean, she mastered walking in a week. really. she was just a little unsure of herself and it held her back. sprout on the other hand is not a cautious child. he dives head first (sometimes literally) into everything. he doesn't hold back and doesn't seem to care if he fails on his first try.
bean is a very verbal child. she spoke in complete sentences by 18 months. she communicates her needs and wants well and always has. sprout barely says a word- mostly just "mommy" and "ball". why? because he is a boy? the second child? because he is a little socially shy? is it because i had a lot more time to just talk to bean? oh, probably a little of all four.
i guess what it boils down to is that they are just very different kids and there is no way to know what they would be like if their gender or birth order was reversed. i think we just have to say that yes, my boy is more physical but i'm not entirely certain as to why.
i also have to say that the sprout is different enough from bean to make it difficult for me to know how to parent him. we've come up with so many situations that we never dealt with bean. i've been questioning myself a lot lately. sigh. parenting is just a never ending learning experience, isn't it?
but he IS just too cute...

Run DMC tee? I LOVE IT!!!!
Buy the Adidas or I will!!! :) haha
I agree with everything you said about boys.... and now looking VERY forward to a girl!p
Wow, a whole post just for me...I feel special! :o) I agree that it really depends more on the individual kid rather than boy vs. girl! Nadia is in some ways an example of that...she used to very much be the dive-in-head-fist fearless type, rolling over at 2 months, walking at 9. In the last year or so, she's become much more cautious - which is VERY welcome. Intetesting to hear your thoughts with one of each!
My husband often says he wishes he had Harrison first and Big Brother second because he was 41 when Harrison was born. Big Brother (now 19) and Harrison are like night and day, BB was quiet, cautious, calm, eager to please and obey (as a child) much easier to correct and disipline.
Harrison, on the other hand, is a bull in a china closet. Spirited, talkative, fearless (for the most part) walking by 10 months and strong willed. disciplining him can be a challenge, as well as exhausting. But he is a true diamond-in-the-rough and so much fun!
He went through stages of not talking (babbling) Around Sprout's age I wondered about his not talking so much and only using two word sentences (he was signing, but over and over again, people told me boys talk later, mainly because are too busy working on the physical skills. For each new skill a toddler learns, another skill falls off the radar for a short time.
I was also told that within a couple months of his 2nd birthday, he speech would probably explode.
Oh it did.
He hasn't stopped talking since!
It sounds like you have your hands absolutely full with little Sprout. It's a good thing he IS so darn cute isn't it? :)
You know, I think one of the most unexpected things about the second child is how staggeringly different they can be from the first.
I just wish I'd had an opportunity to find out :-(
Having said that; my BA was as tough and physical as any of the boys and we played with two fairly constantly from an early age. Once other girls came along she just as easily slipped into playing with them and modified her play accordingly. She certainly talked earlier than her male counterparts but she also didn't talk as fluently as another friend's daughter who was much less physical. I think that thing about one skill developing at the expense of another is true.
He sure is cute in that last photo.
